SEO aims to improve visibility in Google. But what happens when customers stop googling? A growing share of users under 35 already ask AI assistants for product recommendations. Generative Engine Optimization improves the machine-readable data basis for AI systems; mentions and recommendations remain controlled by external platforms.
SEO improves your visibility in classic Google results. GEO works differently: your product, service and business data becomes machine-readable, verifiable and easier for AI answer systems to evaluate. When someone asks ChatGPT 'Which online store for organic olive oil is good?', structured data, sources, reviews and trust signals can influence which brands are mentioned. The final mention is always decided by the AI provider.

A growing share of internet users rely on AI assistants for research and product comparisons. It therefore pays to prepare your data early: content that is clearly structured, current and consistently findable in several places today is available to AI systems both for live research and for future model versions. There is no guarantee of being mentioned more often - providers make that choice.
First: Structured data. Schema.org markup makes your content machine-readable. Second: Good, factually correct content - that gets cited more often than surface-level text. Third: Monitoring. Only those who track how often their brand appears in AI answers can optimize effectively. Beconova covers all three areas.
Simplified, there are two ways a business ends up in an AI answer. First, through knowledge the model learned during training. Second, through live research: systems such as ChatGPT with search, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews fetch pages relevant to the question, read them and summarize them. The second path relies on fundamentals similar to SEO: the page must be reachable, indexable and unambiguous. On top of that, an AI system extracts individual passages. Content that answers a question directly in two or three clear sentences is easier to use than long introductions without a core statement.
Before optimizing, take stock. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: "What do you know about [your company]?" and "Which providers of [your service] do you recommend?" Note whether you are mentioned, whether the details are correct and which sources are linked. Common findings: outdated prices, wrong service descriptions or competitors named instead of you. The linked sources show what the system built its answer from - often directories, comparison sites or forums. That is where you start. Important: AI answers vary from request to request. A single test is a snapshot, not a measurement.
First: key facts exist only in images or PDFs. Prices, services and delivery times belong in HTML text. Second: vague claims instead of verifiable facts. "We are fast" is worthless to an AI, "installation within 5 working days" is quotable. Third: inconsistent company data. If name, service description or contact details differ between website, LinkedIn and directories, a system struggles to connect them. Fourth: no visible update date on guide pages. Fifth: AI crawlers blocked unnoticed by firewall or CDN settings. All five can be checked and fixed without a large budget.
Being visible on Google doesn't mean you're visible on ChatGPT. GEO closes that gap. With Beconova, you can implement your GEO strategy right away - analysis, monitoring, and optimization in one platform.
